Moor Park Golf Club member Rio Saigal narrowly missed out on the England Golf Men’s County Champion of Champions title after a three-way play-off at Woodhall Spa’s Hotchkin Course.
The 22-year-old represented Hertfordshire at the national event on September 13, having earned his place by winning the county championship at Ashridge earlier this year.
The man from Chorleywood began the 36-hole competition by hitting two under par during his first round. He then bested this on his return to the clubhouse with a score of four under after the second round. He produced a well-applauded finish, scoring five under par across his final five holes. This placed him well in contention for the title.
A score of six under par across the two days left Rio level at the top with Zac Mudford and Lincolnshire’s Sam Done, forcing the trio into a sudden-death play-off.
All three players began the playoffs by making par, forcing a second playoff hole to be carried out. Rio managed par again, with the winner taking home the trophy via a birdie to end the playoffs.
Rio’s performance follows an impressive summer, which was covered in last month’s edition of Northwood&RuislipNews, where he spoke about his future in professional golf.
The podium finish provides another notable result for Rio as he prepares for the next steps in his imminent pro career.
