Charity trustee of Garston Ladies FC (GLFC) Richard Bennett reflects on their incredible successes this season.
The rise in women’s football over recent years has inspired many aspiring female footballers to join local teams. GLFC was formed in 1996, swiftly growing into the largest female-only grassroots football club in Hertfordshire. The 2024-25 season saw the club achieve several momentous wins and successes, and a glimmer of the future Jill Scotts.
The U14 Wildcats secured the Division 1 title on Tuesday, April 29, a first for GLFC in seven years. The following week, the team faced Ruislip Rangers U14 Girls Clarets in the hopes of securing the U14 Senior League Cup and the double.
Few chances were created as both teams looked for an opening, until Becca from the Garston side showed her prowess to score the game’s only goal, helping her side successfully complete their mission.
Richard said: “A fitting end to a fantastic season!”
On the same day, the U15 Pumas faced Bury Rangers Youth U15 Girls Lions. After missing out on the league title to the Bury side, the Garston side came in all guns blazing, hoping to get the U15 Senior League Shield win.
Despite the side’s intention, the U15 Pumas soon found themselves on the end of a 2-0 deficit.
Richard explained: “The Pumas pressure intensified and with 20 minutes to go they got a goal back. With Bury unable to cope with the renewed onslaught, the equaliser came with five minutes to go.
“With the belief and momentum, the Puma’s kept pressing and after a scramble in the six-yard box secured the winning goal to give Pumas the win. A true win from determination, belief and never say die attitude.
More celebrations are in order however, as the Garston Ladies Mets also won the Division 1 League title, giving them promotion to the Premier Division.
Richard said: “It’s great to see some of our U18s making their debuts this season, the squad are looking forward to playing in the Premier Division.”
