A Ricky resident who has led the 1st Rickmansworth Cubs for half a century has been awarded a British Empire Medal (BEM) for Services to Young People in Rickmansworth.
When she discovered that she’d been included on the 2024 King’s Birthday Honours List, Sue Johnson felt immediately “honoured”, “amazed” and even “gobsmacked”.
Sue said: “The highlight has been seeing all these young people grow up over the last 50 years. Some of them have sent their own children to Cubs, so I’ve seen a second generation, if you like.”
Alongside her voluntary work with the Scouts, Sue worked as a Teaching Assistant at Rickmansworth Park School for 17 years and manned the box office at Watersmeet for a decade. She also taught swimming for many years and to this day she regularly attends St Mary’s Church.
“I’ve been involved with many aspects of local life,” explained Sue, “so I’ve worked with young people in various different ways.”
An amazingly energetic and lady devoted to her scouts. She was a member of our baby sitting circle that I belonged to, even then she was a great proponent for the scouting family.
A well deserved honour
Congratulations Sue
