A captivating new film written by actor, author, and Radlett resident Jason Cook will be released in Vue cinemas nationally on Friday, December 6.
Cookster: The Darkest Days is based on Jason’s real story as a dyslexic teen who is misunderstood by his family and abandoned by the system.
It was filmed in Radlett, Elstree, Watford, Stanmore and Borehamwood.
In the film, Jason becomes a drug dealer and struggles to balance his addiction and debt to a local gangster, while a rival threatens to destroy his world.
Jason told Radlett News: “When I was 12 years old, I was looking at my peers and everyone was doing drugs, including celebrities; it didn’t seem dangerous.”
It was during his three years and nine months in prison that Jason was diagnosed with dyslexia, which he said changed his outlook on life.
Now, he’s hoping to use the film to raise awareness of dyslexia.
He said: “I struggle with spelling and repeating numbers. I couldn’t differentiate between numbers.
“On the other side, I’m very articulate and confident, but before I felt withdrawn.
“There needs to be more support in schools. I was labelled as the naughty kid. I think it’s getting better [supporting people with dyslexia], but we need to do more.”
The film is the latest success in an incredible journey, which has seen Jason release a four-part book series and films about his life since leaving prison.
Jason recent met Deputy Mayor of Elstree & Borehamwood councillor Dan Ozarow to discuss the release of the new film and Elstree & Borehamwood Town Council’s support.
