GET WELL SOON: Garston councillor raises awareness following cancer diagnosis

Published on: 29th August 2023   |   By: Sophia Sheera   |   Category: Uncategorized

County and borough councillor Tim Williams, has shared that he has been undergoing chemotherapy for advanced prostate cancer since receiving his diagnosis in June.

By the end of October, cllr Williams will have completed all eight courses of chemotherapy, after which he will undergo radiotherapy.

As he progresses through treatment, cllr Williams wants to share the sobering message that one in eight men are affected by prostate cancer in the UK. People of African descent and those with a family history of the condition are at heightened risk.

He said: “Symptoms for prostate cancer can be non-existent and it is known as a ‘silent killer’.

“If someone is experiencing mild symptoms, then don’t dismiss them as a simple sign of getting older but go to see your doctor.”
Symptoms may include trouble urinating or pain in the pelvic area.

For those who are affected, there is lots of support to be found within the local community. Cllr Williams himself has joined the Friends of Prostate Sufferers (FOPS) group in Chorleywood, where trained urologists regularly attend group support meetings.

On Monday, September 11, FOPS will be offering free blood tests to check for signs of prostate cancer and hosting a discussion about men’s health more generally. More information is available at their website.

Additionally, visit the Prostate Cancer UK website if you or a loved one are at risk.
