GENERAL ELECTION: Meet your candidates for The Chalfonts

Published on: 6th December 2019   |   By: News Desk   |   Category: Uncategorized

On December 12, voters in The Chalfonts will elect a new MP for Chesham and Amersham.

MyLocalNews asked each candidate four questions to help you make up your mind.

Dame Cheryl Gillan, Conservative Party

Why should people in The Chalfonts vote for you?

27 years’ public service experience; protecting the green belt; supporting local business and individuals; regular advice surgeries; working with our local health and education services, police, councillors and community leaders to improve our area.

What’s the first thing you will do if elected?

Continue working tirelessly to ensure that the Chilterns environment is protected, hopefully by gaining the National Park status that I initiated and now recommended in the National Landscape Review.

If you win, where will The Chalfonts be in four years’ time?

With excellent schools giving the best life opportunities to every child, improving hospitals, more police, economic growth, a healthy River Misbourne and no HS2!

Where do you stand on Brexit?

Brexit has consumed our politics. To respect the Referendum result and to reach a good settlement with Europe, the deal we have negotiated must be honoured to get Brexit done.

Promoted by Philip Dumville on behalf of Cheryl Gillan, both of Disraeli House, 12 Aylesbury End, Beaconsfield, HP9 1LW

Matt Turmaine, Labour Party

Why should people in The Chalfonts vote for you?

Because only Labour will deliver bold action to fix climate change, build an economy that works for everyone, deal with the funding crisis in the NHS and our public services.

What’s the first thing you will do if elected?

Set up an Engagement Forum, so that local residents can tell their MP and government exactly what their priorities are to make sure I am delivering the best for you.

If you win, where will The Chalfonts be in four years’ time?

A happier, healthier and wealthier place. Labour’s policy agenda works for everyone, so everyone will benefit from what we do in government, including on the environment, economy, transport and schools.

Where do you stand on Brexit?

The referendum result and MPs voting decisions are irreconcilable. The only way to solve this is to be honest about it with the public and vote on a final say.

Dan Gallagher, Liberal Democrats

Why should people in The Chalfonts vote for you?

A vote for me will give our constituency a clear and confident new voice in Parliament. One that has 33 years’ experience in business and not that of a professional politician.

What’s the first thing you do once elected?

Say thank you to the electors. Recognise that a new effort is needed by telling all our political leadership that HS2 is a huge waste of money that will not deliver.

If you win, where will The Chalfonts be in four years’ time?

With an MP who will be working hard to justify the fact that voters elected me to make a difference. We will be a community enthused to tackle our problems without political rancour.

Where do you stand on Brexit?

Without doubt I am for Remain. The decision to Leave is detrimental to our economy, the cohesion of the U.K. and the standing of the U.K. internationally.
