GENERAL ELECTION: Meet your candidates for Stanmore

Published on: 25th November 2019   |   By: News Bulletin   |   Category: Uncategorized

On December 12, voters in Stanmore will elect a new MP.

StanmoreNews asked each candidate four questions to help you make up your mind.

Bob Blackman, Conservative Party

Why should people in Stanmore vote for you?

I am an experienced representative who knows how to stand up for all of our communities in the corridors of power. Since 2010 I have been a strong voice for Harrow East and never taken a backward step.

What’s the first thing you will do if elected?

An urgent – and ongoing – priority is to continue the campaign on Stanmore and Canons Park tube stations. I will be leading the campaign to halt the loss of cark parking spaces and multi-storey housing.

If you win, where will Stanmore be in four years time?

Harrow East will continue to be one of the safest boroughs in London with brilliant local schools and it will be the best part of London to call home.

Where do you stand on Brexit?

I support the Prime Minister’s current deal to leave the European Union and the opportunities it provides for free trade across the Commonwealth and the wider world.

Pamela Fitzpatrick, Labour Party

Why should people in Stanmore vote for you?

I’ve lived in Harrow 19 years. I work here, helping residents through a legal advice charity I founded. This gives me huge insight into issues affecting our community. I have a track record of fighting for local people.

What’s the first thing you will do if elected?

Fight to get our NHS walk-in centres re-opened. The cuts to our NHS under this government have been damaging. I’m proud to stand for a Party for which the NHS is a priority.

If you win, where will Stanmore be in four years’ time?

I want Stanmore to continue to be the beautiful neighbourhood it is, but with improved public services and in a less divided society.

Where do you stand on Brexit?

I voted Remain. However, I think because of the division caused by Brexit, the way forward is not through politicians, but a public vote – with a credible Leave option that protects jobs, the environment and our trade relationship vs. Remain.

Adam Bernard, Liberal Democrat Party

Why should people in Stanmore vote for you?

They deserve better than the two old parties squabbling over how best to wreck the economy. People in Stanmore reject racism, Islamophobia, antisemitism, & xenophobia. They want hope for the future.

What’s the first thing you will do if elected?

A Liberal Democrat majority government will stop Brexit on day one. Then we can get on with the important things: fighting the climate emergency; fixing public services; improving the NHS.

If you win, where will Stanmore be in four years’ time?

Still recognizable. But with cleaner air, cleaner streets, fewer muggings, less hidden poverty, and fewer people worried about the wait to get a GP appointment.

Where do you stand on Brexit?

I oppose Brexit, whether Johnson-flavoured or Corbyn-flavoured. The best deal is the one we already have. Any Brexit means decades of painful negotiations while the UK gets poorer.
