A talented young Rickmansworth tennis player is continuing to go from strength to strength – despite now having to juggle the demands of her sport with university work.
Eliz Maloney, 25, first began playing tennis at five years old and has a string of successes to her name. In 2024, she was the singles, doubles and mixed doubles winner in the Lexus Premier British Tour, and the doubles winner at the International Tennis Federation W15 Event in Spain. She also won the Lexus British Tour Masters and won a silver medal at the Master’U BNP Paribas Championships.
So far this year, she has achieved the British Universities and Colleges Sport (BUCS) quadruple representing Loughborough, becoming the cup, league, doubles and individual champion.
She was also named BUCS Sportswoman of the Year and was selected to represent Great Britain at the World University Games in Germany, where she reached the quarter finals in singles and doubles.
Now beginning her second year studying Accounting and Financial Management at Loughborough University, Eliz told Ricky News that it takes a lot of “organisation and scheduling” to stay on top of things.
She added: “I’m really enjoying the training set-up at Loughborough. Everything is very professional. I’ve got two more years left to use that to really grow and develop and try to make it professionally.”
Asked what her biggest achievement is so far, Eliz said: “Playing Junior Wimbledon in 2017 was very special. I won my first round and lost my second round to the eventual winner of the tournament. It was nerve-wracking at first, but I really enjoyed it.”
Looking ahead, Eliz is now hoping to defend her titles from last year.
She is also hoping local businesses will reach out to sponsor her. Anyone who is interested can contact her father Peter via email petereliz1@hotmail.com
