FUSSPOT: Berkhamsted Dad takes unique approach to picky eaters

Published on: 7th January 2024   |   By: Amy Pollard   |   Category: Uncategorized

A Berkhamsted dad has launched a new app to help parents combat fussy eating in children.

During the COVID-19 lockdown in 2020, father-of-two Findlay Guerin teamed up with his friend, Tom Simmons, to set about using technology to find the scientific answer as to why some children are fussy eaters.

With expert guidance from leading NHS dietitian Lucy Neary and feeding psychology expert Hazel Wolstenholme, they began their journey.

Three years later, Findlay and Tom launched the Sprout app. Already more than 2,000 parents have interacted with the app in a bid to find support and guidance.

This huge interest perhaps comes as no surprise, as studies from across the world have shown that 27 per cent of young children are picky eaters, while 46 per cent of young people are picky at some stage during early childhood.

An Annabel Karmel survey published in 2019 found that 94 per cent of parents admit to feeling stressed on a daily basis because of fussy eating. Additionally, a recent study by Mortar Research in 2023, on behalf of Gousto, found that 87 per cent of parents cater for fussy eaters every day.

Findlay told BERKHAMSTEDnews: “My daughter’s eating was a worry and with the internet awash with conflicting information, accurate professional advice seemed as scarce as the vegetables on her plate. I decided there was a real need for a fresh approach.

“We’re all about trying to help as many parents as possible and that means providing expert professional advice and digital tools to reduce cost.”

At the end of January, Sprout are launching a semi-personalised group programme for parents.

Findlay added: “If readers are interested to head over to the website, they’ll get a lot of value and advice and have the option to join a team.”
