The Atria shopping centre in Watford was evacuated today (Tuesday, August 6) after a fire broke out in one of the stores.
At around 12.32pm, firefighters were called to the scene after reports of a blaze taking place inside a Marks & Spencer fridge-freezer. Though it was already out by the time the firefighters arrived, the centre had become lightly smoke-logged, so it was ventilated and made safe by officers.
Mark Barber, Hertfordshire Fire & Rescue’s assistant chief fire officer, said: “Our Watford, Garston and Rickmansworth crews were sent to reports of a fire in High Street, Watford, early this afternoon. Fortunately, the fire was out by the time firefighters arrived, and nobody as seriously hurt, although three people were treated by the ambulance service for smoke inhalation.”
