Tributes have been paid to a former Bushey councillor and Hertsmere mayor.
On February 28, Hertsmere Borough Council posted on social media site X that staff were “very saddened” by the death of Carey Keates, adding that tributes would be paid at the full council meeting that night.
Carey served as a borough councillor in Bushey for many years after joining the council in 1990, and also served as mayor in 2014-15. He retired from the council in 2019.
Carey was bought up in Nyeri, Kenya, and, after leaving school, wanted to become a soldier. When he was diagnosed with kidney disease, his plans for a military career were ruled out and he instead went to work for London gunmaker Holland & Holland.
Upon seeing an advert to become an estate agent in a local newspaper, Carey decided to change careers. He became manager after six months before founding his own estate agents in Bushey.
Bushey Heath councillor Paul Morris OBE said: “Carey Keates embodied all that represents the contribution made by a local councillor. His contribution exemplifies his commitment to our community spirit. His passing will be a great loss to our community and his family.”
