St Albans’ annual pancake race on Shrove Tuesday raised a record-breaking £7,215 for Home-Start Hertfordshire.
The charity supports vulnerable local families struggling to cope by matching a volunteer Family Mentor with the family, in their own home, to provide 1:1 emotional and practical support.
Organised by Home-Start Hertfordshire and Hertfordshire Business Buzz, the event saw 35 teams race along St Peter’s Street on Tuesday, March 4.
Liz Le Coze, business development manager of Home-Start Herts, said: “We were thrilled to be out on the streets of St Albans again hosting the 2025 Pancake Festival, along with Hertfordshire Business Buzz! The sun shone and the event was enjoyed by so many teams and spectators.
“It’s really important for us to raise awareness of Home-Start Herts and we were able to raise more than ever, all going towards supporting local families. Huge thanks to our headline sponsor SA Law, all our pancake banner sponsors and the goodwill of so many wonderful volunteers who helped on the day – some travelling as far as South-West London, to help for the day!”
Participants took to Facebook to share their thoughts on the events.
The St Albans Cathedral team wrote: “Clergy on the run! Dean Jo, Fr Will, Fr Kevin and Head Verger Joe gave it their all at the St Albans Pancake Race 2025—with no spills! A great way to support Home-Start Herts.”
St Albans Museums wrote: “Has Pancake Race Day ever been this sunny? Thanks so much Home-Start Hertfordshire, Mix 92.6 for compering, and all the race sponsors for a fabulous St Albans Pancake Race today.
“Team St Albans Museums’ Boudiccas may not have won this year (and we might have stood on a pancake mid-race) but we’re claiming victory for taking part!”
