FIREWORK FRUSTRATION: New Year fireworks exacerbate Stanmore resident’s noise pollution concerns

Published on: 25th January 2023   |   By: Jacob Collick   |   Category: Uncategorized

A Stanmore resident has shared their concerns regarding noise pollution and fireworks, and how this might negatively impact the wildlife that lives in Bentley Priory Nature Reserve.

As well as fears about the impact on animals, the resident also stated their concerns over how the noise reduces the utility of the land for pedestrians looking to escape into nature.

These concerns were exacerbated over the New Year, with the noise described as being akin to a warzone.

The resident told STANMOREnews: “We have two dogs, one of which is fine around fireworks, but the other one just becomes a nervous wreck when the fireworks start going off.

“We were genuinely worried for her wellbeing with how she was shaking and yelping. It was horrific to watch. You can’t explain that it will be okay to a dog. It’s heart-breaking.”

Concerns were also raised over how the fireworks may have affected the fallow deer living in Bentley Priory Nature Reserve.

In other areas in the UK, several horses were so stressed by fireworks that they became exhausted and had to be put down.

Ahead of the New Year, the RSPCA reminded members of the public about the impact fireworks can have on animals with their #BangOutOfOrder campaign.

Advice offered by the RSPCA states: “Horses, farm animals and wildlife can be negatively affected by fireworks. The RSPCA continues to urge organisers of events to avoid letting off fireworks near where animals are kept.”

Bentley Priory Nature Reserve management has been contacted for comment.
