FEARLESS FLYER: Interview with Eddie ‘The Eagle’ Edwards ahead of starring role in Rickmansworth pantomime

Published on: 1st December 2025   |   By: News Desk   |   Category: Uncategorized

Never one to shy away from a challenge, Michael David Edwards, better known as Eddie the Eagle, made history as Great Britain’s first Olympic ski jumper. Competing in the 1988 Winter Olympics in Calagry, Eddie finished last but his courage and determination won a legion of fans from across the world.

Since then, Eddie has broken records, starred in TV shows like The Jump and Dancing on Ice, and inspired millions through public speaking. The 2016 biopic Eddie the Eagle, starring Taron Egerton and Hugh Jackman, cemented his legacy. After his pantomime debut in Cinderella, Eddie is thrilled to return to the stage this Christmas.

We spoke to Eddie about his experience and his upcoming role as Professor Crackpot in this year’s pantomime, Beauty and the Beast, at Watersmeet theatre in Rickmansworth.

What do you love most about being part of pantomime?

Panto is such a wonderful British Christmas tradition. It’s all about fun, laughter, and audience participation. The more the audience gets involved, the better! This is my second pantomime, and I absolutely loved my first. The energy, the laughter, the interaction. It’s just brilliant to be part of something that brings so much joy.

What was it like seeing Eddie the Eagle the movie come to life?

I thought the film was fantastic. I signed the deal back in 1999, so it was amazing to finally see it made. Taron Egerton captured me perfectly: how he looked, sounded, and acted was incredible. The film really portrayed the heart, spirit, and essence of my story.

I’m very proud of it, it still makes me tear up when I watch it.

Which is scarier: a ski jump or your first pantomime entrance?

They’re scary in different ways! With ski jumping, one mistake can break bones. With pantomime, if you forget your lines, you just wing it and carry on.

Confidence is key!

What advice would you give to young people chasing their dreams?

Never give up. People told me I couldn’t do it, that it was impossible. That only made me more determined. Believe in yourself, keep going, and even if you fail, at least you tried.

Who knows, you might just fly!
