‘FEARLESS BODY’: Beloved Pinner author wins prestigious writer’s prize

Pinner resident Michael Rosen, the author of more than 200 books, has won the 2023 PEN Pinter Prize for his “fearless” body of works.

The prize was established in 2009 to commemorate the life of Nobel Prize-winning playwright Harold Pinter CBE. The prize is awarded annually to a writer in residence who in the words of Harold Pinter’s Nobel speech, casts an “unflinching, unswerving” gaze upon the world.

Michael will receive his prize in October at a ceremony at The British Library. The prize is shared with a Writer of Courage, a writer, chosen by Michael, who is “active in defence of freedom of expression, often at great risk to their own safety and liberty”.

Ruth Borthwick, chair of English PEN, said: “Michael Rosen is one of our most tenacious and fearless writers. He is one of our most significant contemporary poets writing for young people.”

Michael took to Twitter to celebrate his win, where he said: “At first I thought that I had been awarded the 2023 PEN Pinter prize for a ‘fearless body’. Seems that I misread that.”
