A Garston-based community café is celebrating two years at their current building, and the amazing work they have done for sustainability.
Random Café launched in 2017 with a mission to promote being budget-conscious and green by saving food from landfill. Work really took off for the team when they moved into their building on Garsmouth Way two years ago.
Now, the café has helped to save over 120 tonnes of food from landfill by working with local supermarkets, businesses, shops, food producers and farms, intercepting food that would otherwise be thrown away.
Speaking to Garston News, founder and project manager Jane Johnson said: “It is amazing to see what we have achieved. When we got the keys in September 2020, it was a mess!
“In that time, it is amazing to see what the volunteers have done, we have a fantastic team here and the stuff they have done is brilliant.”
She explained that the front counter was built using spare wood from the outside cladding, and the patio stones were donated by a resident who was having a new patio laid.
Jane continued: “Our dream is to get to the point where we are self-sufficient, as we rely heavily on fundraising events to keep us going. But it’s hard to imagine a bigger goal when we are so pleased with how far we have got!”
Random Café is now working on fundraising for a second building.
