FAMILY FUNDRAISER: Father and son cycle from Vietnam to Cambodia to support migrants

A father and son duo have raised more than £6,000 for a Rickmansworth charity in memory of their close family member who died unexpectedly.

Patrick Biel’s father Jack and brother Damian cycled from Vietnam to Cambodia, covering 350km from November 19 to 29.

Before his tragic death in a car accident in 2014, 21-year-old Patrik volunteered much of his time at the Catholic Worker Farm (CWF) in Rickmansworth.

Jack and Damian have pledged all funds raised to the CWF, a charity that provides housing to female asylum-seekers and those with no recourse to public funds.

Over the 17-odd years that the CWF has been in operation, it has hosted around 650 migrant women.

After Patrik’s death, his family founded Patrik’s Trust in order to buy the Grade-II listed farmhouse that the project’s founder, Scott Albrecht, was then renting out of his own pocket.

Scott said: “Living in a Grade II farmhouse, it can get pretty drafty in winter. It costs about £1,400 every five weeks to heat the house. Hopefully some of the money raised by our long-term friends Jack and Damian will go towards that!”
