FAIR FUN: Abbots Langley carnival returns with nautical theme

Published on: 11th June 2023   |   By: Bryn Holmes   |   Category: Uncategorized

The annual Abbots Langley Carnival took place yesterday (Saturday, June 10), with people from across the village and beyond coming to enjoy the famous parade, play games and go on fairground rides.

This year’s event, organised by Watford Lions, was given the theme of “All at Sea”, with parade participants encouraged to give their outfits and floats a nautical theme.

Speaking to ABBOTSnews about the idea for the theme, Watford Lions chairman Gita Mistry said: “The idea was that all the children from all the schools taking part would know what’s happening at the moment to our planet.

“Saving the sea using recyclable materials, not using all the harsh carrier bags, so everything they’ve made is recyclable. They’ve made a tremendous effort, and it’s nice for the children to learn what’s going on to the planet as they get older.”

Gita herself was part of the team who awarded prizes before the carnival, with Divine Saviour Roman Catholic Primary winning the Watford Lions Shield, and the Harpenden Pipe Band and the Women’s Institute also picking up prizes for their festival attire and presence.

At 12pm, the floats, performers and marchers made their way around the village, before eventually returning to the recreation ground on Gallows Hill Lane, where fairground rides, food tents, fun games and special market stalls were all waiting for visitors to enjoy until 5pm.

Chairman of Abbots Langley Parish Council, councillor Stephen Giles-Medhurst, said: “It’s been a fantastic community event. It brings everyone together, with the parade, the funfair and the atmosphere, and most importantly, it raises a huge amount of money for charity.”
