A Northwood resident and charity CEO has shared her story with Peers and MPs in a speech at the Houses of Parliament.
Pallvee Shah, CEO of the vulnerable persons charity Help Change Lives, spoke to Parliament on Tuesday, April 29. She was invited as part of a series of talks hosted by the Institute of Jainology, highlighting the power of compassion for others.
She said: “Growing up, I could see the poverty all around me in Kenya and it was heartbreaking. I really wanted to help but, as with most people, I didn’t really know how.”
Pallvee climbed the career ladder, working for years as a corporate tax advisor at Deloitte London.
She said: “Then in August 2017, everything changed through one act of kindness. I donated a larger sum, £150, to a Kenyan pastor to help a poor widow with nine starving grandchildren.
“I wasn’t expecting much from him, but he sent me a full report, receipts and photos of how the money had been spent and the impact it had made. The transformation in the grandmother’s face from total despair to hope and a smile was truly amazing and wonderful.
“It made me realise that it takes a bit of love and compassion, someone trustworthy on the ground and more than a bit of loose change, to really make an impact. And I was hooked.”
Pallvee focused her worldwide efforts on four areas: Helping more than 15,000 girls with reusable period pad kits, sponsoring more than 1,000 children in secondary schools, helping people in Kenya access healthcare, and supporting more than 200 families in Kenya with basic needs.
