ERNIE’S RESCUE: Owner of Bushey bird sanctuary appeals for volunteers and donations

Published on: 13th February 2023   |   By: Holly Bullen   |   Category: Uncategorized

A bird sanctuary in Bushey is appealing to the community for volunteers and donations.

Ernie’s Bird Rescue, named after a pigeon called Ernie, was first set up around seven years ago by Atif Ansari, and is located in an allotment in Finch Lane.

Since its inception Atif has helped rescue hundreds of injured birds and is becoming well-known in the Bushey community.

Speaking to BusheyNews, Atif said he is proud of how the sanctuary has grown and is looking to develop it further and educate children in schools about wildflife and birds.

He said: “I set up the rescue myself as I found that I couldn’t find anyone who could take care of the birds.

“I’ve been caring for birds for 35 years and a hobby turned into a passion and a rescue sanctuary. I found an injured pigeon who didn’t have anyone to go so I thought I’m going to take it in myself.

“Ernie was the second pigeon that came in and the rest was history so we decided to name it after him.”

Atif added that the support from the community has been great so far and is delighted to see people take a fascination in the birds.

He said: “The local community is now getting to know me which is very helpful. It’s exciting when people recognise you and ask if they can bring a bird to you. It’s good to know people have a fascination for wildlife.”
