Around 500 pupils were evacuated from The Grove Academy in Watford this afternoon (Friday, December 13), following reports of a fire.
Hertfordshire Fire and Rescue Service were called at 1.53pm to reports of a fire in a kitchen area at The Grove Academy in Watford. Three fire engines were sent to the scene and firefighters extinguished the fire, ventilated smoke from the affected room, and used thermal imaging cameras to check to confirm the fire was fully out.
The school was successfully evacuated and nobody was hurt. An investigation into the cause of the fire is taking place, but it is believed to have started accidentally.
Deputy Chief Fire Officer Mark Barber said: “I’d like to thank the staff at The Grove Academy for evacuating almost 500 pupils quickly and efficiently while our crews dealt with a fire in a kitchen area at the school. We were alerted by the school’s automatic fire alarm, and as we get close to Christmas this is a timely reminder of the importance of making sure you have working smoke alarms and that all your guests know how to get out in an emergency.”
