FIREY FLATS: Firefighters descend on Ruislip after early morning balcony blaze

Published on: 1st April 2022   |   By: Bryn Holmes   |   Category: Uncategorized

Around 60 firefighters were called to deal with a fire at a block of flats in Ruislip that left a balcony on the seventh floor destroyed.

The London Fire Brigade (LFB) were called at around 4:26am on the morning of April 1 to a fire in the apartment block, located on Pembroke Road.

Crews from Ruislip, Hillingdon, Harrow, Southall, Wembley and Northolt all attended the scene, with eight fire engines in total. Fortunately, the blaze was under control by 6:16am, and nobody was injured.

Back at the LFB’s control office, officers were able to use the new ‘999Eye’ system to help fight the fire. Put into place by the Brigade since October last year, this allows them to ask 999 callers if they would like to provide them a livestream of the scene using their phone.

999Eye then sends a text message with a secure, one-use link to provide a live video that goes directly back to the control office, giving firefighters better situational awareness and offer advice based on the footage.

The cause of the fire is believed to have been the unsafe disposal of smoking materials.

A London Fire Brigade spokesperson said: “Fires caused by smoking materials including cigarettes, roll-ups, cigars and pipes, result in more deaths than any other type of fire. Stub cigarettes out properly and always dispose of them carefully.

“Make sure smoking materials are cold before emptying ashtrays. Preferably wet stubs before throwing them into a bin.”
