Pupils at a Chorleywood primary school were recently given the chance to make a practical difference to the village’s wildlife.
On Tuesday, May 7, volunteers from local environmental group Sustainable Three Rivers (S3R) talked to Year 3 and 4 pupils at The Russell School. S3R members Rosi Jordan and Ted Casey collaborated with pupils to make bird boxes in exciting workshops.
Pupils also used the opportunity to learn how to use tools such as screwdrivers and power drills to put the wood together and create their bird boxes.
A spokesperson for S3R said: “They [the schoolchildren] had a fantastic time and learnt to work as a team to meet the challenge. Over 15 bird boxes were made, and the team also left sunflowers and broad bean saplings for the children to plant in the school grounds.”
The school is now working towards an application for a prestigious Green Flag award.
