A Post Office in Watford is to remain closed for the foreseeable future following a major fire that has left the shop in a state of disrepair.
A blaze broke out in The Pond Post Office on The Parade in the early hours of Friday, April 7, causing severe damage.
Three fire engines from Watford and Garston arrived on the scene at 4.20am and found smoke billowing out of the building. The flats above were evacuated while the blaze was extinguished. The cause was determined to be an electrical accident.
A Post Office spokesperson said: “Regrettably, The Pond Post Office is temporarily closed after a major fire at the store on Friday, April 7. We are supporting the postmaster. The extent of the damage is still being assessed. It is not yet known when the branch can re-open.
“We have explored the possibility of a temporary location, however, there are no suitable premises. There are nearby branches at Vicarage Road, North Watford and Watford, which are all within a mile of The Pond Post Office.”
The Vicarage Road Post Office is located at units 91 to 93 on the eponymous road, the North Watford branch is at 200 St Albans Road, and the Watford branch is inside the WHSmith store in the Atria Watford shopping centre.
