Anyone attempting to put their own spin on a classic film like The Wedding Singer needs to tread carefully or risk alienating an army of loyal fans. It’s a brave and ambitious move for anyone, let alone an amateur theatre company, to handle such cherished material so the Ricky Players deserve enormous credit for reviving an old favourite and in such an absorbing way. Although the musical version is never going to be the same, if you enjoyed the film as much as I and millions of other people did then you would have loved this show at Rickmansworth’s Watersmeet Theatre. James Yank and Amy Carmichael as the Adam Sandler and Drew Barrymore roles are hugely engaging and the rest of the cast also deserve credit for this feel good trip down memory lane that will take you back to the 1980s and leave you with a warm fuzzy feeling inside when you leave the theatre.
