DONATE & DEVELOP: Vacant Northwood church could be converted into mosque and community centre

A Muslim charity is calling for fundraising support as it looks to convert a Northwood church into a mosque and community centre.

Since 2011, the Iron Aid Foundation (IAF) has been searching for a suitable location to establish a base sufficient to serve a community of 20,000 Muslims from Northwood and the surrounding areas.

Hopes of utilising the currently vacant Northwood Police Station were dashed when Hillingdon Council rejected the proposal in April, stating: “It was felt that this was the wrong location given the concerns regarding the highways implications on a busy junction, with a supermarket and a school nearby.”

Now, the IAF has identified the unused Eastcote and Northwood Hills United Reformed Church (URC) on Joel Street as an appropriate alternative.

The church closed its doors in April after 65 years due to its amalgamation with St John’s URC, Northwood, and comes equipped with five halls and a suitably large car park.

The IAF has already raised £1million for the purchase of the freehold and is now asking for support in raising a further £1.8million to meet the asking price before the September cutoff date.

An IAF spokesperson said: “We have been blessed with a unique opportunity to purchase a church and transform it into a place of worship.

“We’re planning to create not only a place of worship, but a hub for the elderly and youth, as well as young mothers and their children. Quranic studies, youth development, food drives, charitable initiatives, and social gatherings are all part of our planning strategy. The opportunity is immense.”

Property consultants Rapleys said: “Our client [the amalgamated churches of Eastcote & Northwood Hills and St John’s URC, Northwood] has worked closely with IAF for some years and is pleased to be able to sell the property to a party they are actively engaged with in doing good in the local community.”
