DODGY DRIVING: Garston residents raise safety concerns over increase in poor parking

Published on: 5th January 2024   |   By: Sophia Sheera   |   Category: Uncategorized

Reports of poor parking in Garston are getting louder and more frequent.

Cars and vans are allegedly regularly parked on double yellow lines on Watford Road and along York Way. On residential roads, some drivers have been known to park in front of residents’ driveways.

According to a long-time resident of Felden Close, the issue of bad parking has worsened significantly since the Garston bus garage was knocked down and new houses built. Alongside a lack of parking spaces to accommodate new residents, they allege that there aren’t enough spaces available for shoppers.

The resident said: “Cars are also often parked on the pavement, which is legally a grey area. People using wheelchairs or guide dogs can’t squeeze past.”

Another resident suggested that the railings around the car park on York Way should be removed, in part because the metalwork blocks the pavement and makes the car park itself look closed.

Lib Dem county councillor Stephen Cavinder said: “There are a number of issues on York Way and the associated roads, and parking is one of them. Pedestrian safety outside the shops is paramount and illegal parking affects pedestrian safety. The issue has been taken up with Watford Community Housing (WCH). Protective barriers are needed outside the York Way shops but disappointingly, there are no plans from WCH or Hertfordshire County Council (HCC) as of yet.”

Elected Mayor of Watford Peter Taylor said: “We do need to see action here to make sure that people walking outside these shops are safe. WCH and HCC are aware of the issue, and Liberal Democrat councillors have raised the subject multiple times with them, pressing them to make improvements, but none have been made so far.”

WCH and HCC have been contacted for comment.
