This month’s photo features the old school building at Harvey Road Primary School.
The photo was taken on July 12, 1997, shortly before the building was demolished.
Harvey Road opened in 1939, at a time when the other two schools in the village, Yorke Road and Watford Road Boys, were overcrowded. This old wooden building was built quickly the year before.
Opening the same year as the beginning of the Second World War, many of the school’s earliest students were evacuees from cities, with air raid shelters also built nearby in case of attack.
This building served the school well until 1997, when it was replaced by a new one on the site of the school’s playing field. The site of the old building is now the new playing field.
