This photograph is dated to September 23, 1929 and depicts a group of women racing each other with aquaplanes in the Rickmansworth Aquadrome.
Aquaplaning, the sport of riding a specially designed motor vehicle on water, was developed in the early 20th century, becoming a fashionable recreational pastime for a while.
However, it would eventually wane in popularity as other water sports such as water skiing and knee boarding took over in the 1920s and 1950s respectively.
The Rickmansworth Aquadrome also has a relatively recent history, with the two lakes being created by the extraction of gravel for use in constructing the original Wembley Stadium between 1922 and 1923.
It is now the town’s most beloved recreational spot, attracting visitors from across the Hertfordshire area, whilst also acting as a reserve for the area’s wildlife.
