Divided by Faith, United by Football

Published on: 20th November 2018   |   By: Jason Allen   |   Category: Uncategorized

The universal language of football brought together schoolchildren from Shenley Primary School and across Hertsmere to learn more about different faiths at a special diversity event organised by Arsenal FC.

The children were taught about Islamic, Jewish and Christian traditions at Arsenal’s London Colney training ground.

The ‘teachers’ were pupils from secondary schools, including Immanuel College in Bushey.

After answering questions about the different religions, the primary schoolchildren completed football-related exercises.

The day, delivered by Arsenal in the community coaches, is part of a highly successful community sports partnership between Arsenal Football Club and Hertsmere Borough Council, which has delivered a range of local initiatives, including curriculum football, holiday activities, girls’ football and a Double Club.

Councillor Caroline Clapper, portfolio holder for leisure, culture and health, said: “The Diversity event is a great opportunity for children to learn about different faiths, which helps to promote understanding and builds tolerance of others among the young, a vital component in social cohesion.

“This event also gave the pupils a chance to make new friends and to practice their cognitive skills, as well as being able to participate in a physical activity that they enjoy.”
