DISTRICT CHAMPS: Chorleywood school continues track dominance

Published on: 22nd July 2019   |   By: News Desk   |   Category: Uncategorized

St Clement Danes (SCD) athletic success continued last month as students excelled at both district and national level.

The Chorleywood school finished over 100 points in front of runners-up, Parmiter’s School, to pick the district title.

Dominance at the Watford & District Schools Athletics Championships is a familiar feeling for the school as they have finished first in 12 of the past 14 years, also winning the last seven years consecutively.

Both the girls and the boys’ teams from SCD topped the tables in their respected categories with SCD girls having to share the top spot with Harberdashers Girls, as they both finished on 266.

Years 7 to 10 from SCD in the boys A categories finished first whilst the girls from Years 7 to 9 finished second in the A categories and Year 10 girls finished fourth.

Alongside the district success, SCD students performed well at the ESAA national school’s championships.

Five students from the school represented Hertfordshire and did the school and the county proud.

Year 9 student, Scarlett Gammell, came 4th in the 75m hurdles with an impressive time of 11.31 seconds.

Fellow Year 9 students, Connor Flynn and Phoenix Chambers, performed well in the pole vault and the 100m heats.

Connor finished 6th in the pole vault competition clearing 3.15m, whilst Phoenix ran a time of 12 seconds in the 100m heats against a strong field.

Grace Hucknall and Nick Savva, both in Year 10, done well in the long jump and 400m heats.

Grace came 20th in long jump with a leap of 5.05m and Nick ran a time of 53.54 seconds on the track in the 400m heats.

Athletes took part in the national event, which took place at the Alexander Stadium, Birmingham, following their performances at the country championships earlier in the summer.

Ian Birkett, head of the PE at St Clement Danes: “It has been a fantastic season for all our athletes with wins for the team at the District Finals and many successes for individuals at the County Championships.

“We are incredibly proud of these students who represented Hertfordshire at these championships as a result of their performances earlier in the season and who performed magnificently on the national stage.”
