DEDICATED RIDE: Sisters embark on charity cycle from London to Brighton for Watford General Hospital

Published on: 12th September 2025   |   By: Naomi Greenaway   |   Category: Uncategorized

A brave mum and her sister have taken on a cycle challenge from London to Brighton to raise crucial funds for Watford General Hospital’s (WGH) Starfish Ward.

Becky and Sophie (pictured left to right) chose to take on the challenge after Becky’s son, Max, was diagnosed with the genetic condition Poirier-Bienvenu neurodevelopmental syndrome at only six months old.

The rare disorder causes seizures and can lead to developmental and intellectual delays. Now two years old, Max goes to the hospital for check-ups every three to four months.

Determined to help spread awareness of Max’s condition, the two sisters have dedicated the 55-mile challenge to all those who have supported the family on their journey so far.

Speaking to WATFORDnews before the cycle, Becky said: “To the staff at the Starfish Ward, we are in awe of you all.

“It’s clear for all to see you do what you do with so much love and passion, and it’s hard to find the words to truly show how grateful we are to you.”

Some of the money raised by the pair will go towards creating a room for parents to relax in, while the rest will help to update the Starfish Ward.

Becky added: “At the moment, there is no quiet place in the Starfish Ward where a mother or father can go to sit in peace, have a cup of tea, decompress, and actually process what’s going on.”

Beyond fundraising, Becky and Sophie hope to draw more awareness to the condition in the hopes of finding better treatments and allowing those who are diagnosed to enjoy their life to the fullest.

Alison Rosen, chief executive of West Herts Hospitals Charity, said: “We are incredibly grateful to Sophie and Becky for taking on this challenge.

“Their determination and love for Max embody what our charity is about, going above and beyond for families. Every penny raised will help enhance care for children on the Starfish Ward.”

As WATFORDnews goes to print, the ride was set to take place on Sunday, September 14.
