A Kings Langley resident has written a book about what makes the preppy style so iconic.
Using her background working at Selfridges and fashion platform Lyst, as well as freelance work with Armani, writer Rosalyn Gomersall has identified what has shaped one of history’s most enduring styles.
Rosalyn was approached last year by American publisher Rock Point to write a book about the origins and evolution of the preppy style.
From Ivy League students using fashion as a form of rebellion to Japanese hipsters and Kanye West’s college drop-out look, Preppy Style: A Modern Guide to Timeless Fashion explores everything that has made the style so recognisable. It also features over 100 illustrations.
Speaking to KINGSnews, Rosalyn shared: “One of the things I found interesting was the influence Black culture has had on preppy style.
“New York street gangs had a huge impact, with a group called the Lo Lifes known for stealing Ralph Lauren polo shirts. It isn’t well documented, but it really boosted the brand at the time and modernised prep.
“Elements of the preppy look have now become so popular they are no longer even associated with preppy style.”
