DAVID’S DIARY: Bushey resident shares cancer journey online to raise money for charity

A retired journalist from Bushey is sharing his cancer journey in a bid to help others and raise money for Mount Vernon Cancer Centre (MVCC).

David Davis, 86, was diagnosed with kidney cancer towards the end of last year, and has since launched an online diary to help other cancer sufferers.

Speaking about why he decided to start the diary, David said after starting his immunotherapy treatment he was hit by a fatigue that was like being “hit by lightning” but couldn’t sit around and do nothing.

He said: “I decided I couldn’t sit around doing nothing at all. It just wasn’t me; my whole life I was a journalist and had been very active in this country and around the world.

“My wife Beryl encouraged me to get back to my computer. My initial purpose in writing was to help me get my head straight but also if any other cancer sufferers were interested, they may pick up on some tips on how I’m coping with living with cancer.”

David added that the people who really deserve recognition are the staff at MVCC, which led him to create the fundraising page in addition to the diary.

He said: “In my early research I suddenly realised that MVCC was recognised around the world and I’m lucky that it’s a 15-minute drive away; I’ve got the best treatment in the world.

“It’s been interesting that people that don’t even know me have heard and contacted me wishing me good luck. That drives me on.”
