CURE CANCER: Stanmore resident’s charity donates £2million worth of equipment

Published on: 21st May 2024   |   By: Sophia Sheera   |   Category: Uncategorized

A Stanmore resident says she was “left with no choice but to do something” after being diagnosed with the same type of cancer as her late father.

Sandra Hamilton fundraises for state-of-the-art medical equipment her charity, Cure Cancer, and then donates each piece of pioneering technology to the medical team at University College London (UCL).

Each year, the charity receives a wish list from doctors at UCL detailing the equipment they sorely need, and Sandra and her team then fundraise tirelessly to get the goods to the medical facility.

This month, the charity purchased a pioneering NovoCyte Flow Cytometer laser for £186,000 to help researchers better understand immune response to infectious disease.

Much of Sandra’s drive comes understandably from her own life story.

“Life has been rather fraught,” she shared. “My father died from Non-Hodgkin lymphoma in 2022, which I was also diagnosed with. My mum has ovarian, lung and bowel cancer, and my son was also found to have a brain tumour aged 32. I myself have undergone stem cell surgery and I’ve got bone cancer and blood cancer and now they’ve found a lesion in my breast.

“None of us know how long we’ve got on this earth, especially not me. I hurt through my back and bones most of the day. I’ve had no choice but to do something.”

Since establishing the charity in 2010, Cure Cancer has donated £2million worth of equipment to UCL, and Sandra has been interviewed on GB News about her fundraising work.

The charity’s next fundraising event is the Annual Pooch Fun Morning, which will be held  at Aldenham Social Club on Sunday, May 19. To donate funds or buy a ticket to enter your dog in this local canine agility competition, visit www.shorturl.at/djmPQ
