‘COST OF CHAOS’: St Albans MP slams Chancellor’s Autumn Statement

Published on: 17th November 2022   |   By: News Bulletin   |   Category: Uncategorized

St Albans MP Daisy Cooper has accused the Conservatives of “incompetence and chaos” after the autumn statement saw tax hikes and cuts to local public services for St Albans residents.

The Chancellor’s measures come in the wake of economic turmoil following the Conservative “mini-budget” which saw mortgage rates spike.

For months, the Liberal Democrats have been calling for a tougher windfall tax on oil and gas giants to help pay for help with energy bills and support for the vulnerable.

Daisy said: “This is the cost of chaos budget and it is going to leave every single person, here in St Albans and around the country, paying the price through unfair higher taxes and weaker public services.

“Here in St Albans, people are already struggling. Some tell me they can only afford two hot showers a week, others are asking the foodbank for food they don’t need to heat up. It’s a damning indictment of the Conservative government’s incompetence.

“I’m calling for a fair deal, including support for people unable to afford skyrocketing mortgage bills and rents, and protecting funding for local public services. This could be paid for by reversing tax cuts for banks and a proper windfall tax on the oil and gas giants, instead of imposing years of stealth taxes on ordinary families. This is an out-of-touch Conservative Government which has no plan to help people in St Albans with their bills.”
