A stuntman who was injured while working on a film at Warner Bros. Studios Leavesden has won a legal claim against the movie’s production company after they admitted liability.
In 2019, Joe Watts was working on Fast X, the tenth film in the Fast & Furious series, and was rehearsing a fight sequence with a stand-in for the movie’s star, Vin Diesel.
Mr Watts was thrown over a balcony and fell 20 feet onto a concrete floor. He was left with a brain injury and a fractured skull, amongst other injuries.
In a lawsuit brought by Mr Watts against FF9 Pictures Limited, a subsidiary of Universal Pictures UK, it is alleged that a safety wire malfunctioned and that the stunt was performed differently to how it was intended.
Mr Watts was in a coma for five days following the incident, and according to his legal filings, he will no longer be able to work as a stuntman due to the life-changing injuries he sustained.
In the defence filing on June 20, 2023, FF9 Pictures Limited admitted liability for the incident.
The money to be paid out in the settlement is to be decided by the High Court at a later date.
Universal Pictures UK have been contacted for comment.
