A man has been charged in connection with a common assault against a young woman in Watford town centre.
Oladayo Aileru, aged 37, from the Bennetts End area of Hemel Hempstead, has been charged with common assault in relation to an incident on Friday October 8.
An 18-year-old woman was walking along the High Street with friends when she was approached by a man who grabbed her arm and attempted to engage her in conversation.
The victim’s friends told the man to leave and after a few seconds, he let go of the victim’s arm and walked away.
The victim was not physically injured but the incident left her unsettled and a short time later, she approached a police officer to report what had happened.
Aileru has been released on conditional bail and is next scheduled to appear at St Albans Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday November 23.
His bail conditions state that he must not enter the borough of Watford, he must remain at his home address between 10pm and 7am every day, and he must not contact the victim of the assault. If he breaches these conditions, he will be arrested.
Watford Chief Inspector Ian Grout said: “We are pleased to report that we have secured a charge in relation to this incident, which left the victim and her friends understandably shaken. We now await the outcome of Aileru’s court appearance next month.
“All women and girls deserve to feel safe and be safe while enjoying a night out in Watford. There is already local partnership work in the pipeline to address community concerns on this issue and we will share the details of our plans in the very near future.
“We are working to enhance trust in policing among all our communities. We are continuing to listen to concerns so we can create the right solutions. It is vital that everyone feels safe using our streets and everyone feels like they can approach a police officer knowing they will receive appropriate help and support.”
