COMING SOON: Plans approved for new budget supermarket in Hemel Hempstead

Published on: 20th May 2023   |   By: Megan Milstead   |   Category: Uncategorized

Plans have been approved to build a new Lidl supermarket on Jarman Way in Hemel Hempstead, despite objections from its competitor Tesco.

The store will be located on the vacant development site at Jarman Fields on St Albans Road and would include associated car parking, access, landscaping, and engineering works.

The site is close to the Tesco Extra store, which has traded there for almost 30 years since 1994. The application was submitted to Dacorum Borough Council on March 11 and was approved last month on May 4.

Lidl previously considered the former Debenhams site in the town centre as an option, but concluded it was “unsuitable to accommodate their business model”.

They also visited sites in Queen Square in Adeyfield, Henry Wells Square in Grove Hill, Woodhall Farm, Bellgate, The Heights, Leverstock Green, Bennetts End, Nash Mills and Apsley.

The planning permission reads: “The site comprises land that was formally a landfill site and is now vacant scrubland. The proposals seek to redevelop the site and construct a well-designed development at a prominent site at the entrance to Jarman Fields Retail Park and on an arterial route into Hemel Hempstead.

“The proposals will create employment during the construction period and will provide approximately 20 new full-time equivalent jobs once the store is operational.

“The design of the food store is simple and modern. It will be located along the site’s southern and eastern boundary, with a glazed frontage facing the wider retail park and Jarman Way, and the store entrance will be located at the north-eastern corner of the building where it is most accessible to pedestrians.

The proposals also include 130 parking spaces, which will be accessed via the existing

access with Jarman Way.”

Lidl and Tesco have been contacted for comments.
