An elderly man from Watford recently ran the famous Great North Run for a children’s charity. John Coleman, 70, did the run for Starlight, national charity that grants once-in-a-lifetime wishes for seriously and terminally ill children and provides entertainment in hospitals and hospices across the UK. As a longstanding supporter of the charity, John has run a staggering 16 London Marathons for Starlight and he’s now able to add the Great North Run to his list. He said he felt excited about taking on a new challenge and proud to be carrying the Starlight star throughout the race. John said: “I’m passionate about what Starlight do. Not only do they help create magical memories for the poorly child, but for the whole family.” Known as the most iconic half marathon in the world, the race runs between Newcastle-upon-Tyne and South Shields and was devised by former Olympic 10,000m bronze medallist and BBC Sport commentator Brendan Foster. The money that John raises will not only help Starlight bring fun, laughter and distraction to lots of poorly children across the country, but it will also enable the charity to grant the wishes of thousands of brave children, letting them enjoy the magic of being a child again. With 92p of every pound raised going directly to the cause, the money that John raises really will make a massive difference to seriously and terminally ill children across the UK. John added: “It feels great to have completed the Great North Run and to have raised money for Starlight, a charity that’s so close to my heart. “There were some very hilly parts of the course which were challenging but all those hard months of training paid off and it felt amazing when I crossed the finish line! I feel very proud.”
