There is nothing more Christmassy than the advent calendar, and St Mary’s Church in Amersham decided to use this as inspiration for something on a larger scale.
The social team at St Mary’s wanted to get the community into the Christmas spirit, so set out to create an advent calendar. But instead of unveiling chocolates, residents would unveil colourful and imaginative Christmas scenes crafted onto their home windows.
Speaking to Amersham News, Reverend Jonny Rapson said: “Lots of people wanted to get involved; it really captured everyone’s imaginations!
“It has been great to see what people have put together and when people come to me from the church and have a passion for an idea. It’s been so inspiring to see.”
The windows included the Three Wise Men, a jolly snowman, and Mary receiving the message from God that she would give birth to Jesus Christ. The church even hosted two guided walks to take residents through the unveiled windows.
Revd Rapson continued: “To see the interest from the local community, people asking what it is about, learning more about the Christmas story, and to see it take shape is great!
“For us as a church, we want people to know that the church is there for them. We are quite keen to look out to the community, and this is a great example of that.”
