Prime Minister Boris Johnson says relaxations on COVID-19 restrictions will now be scrapped after a surge in cases in London and the South East.
London and the South East, including Hertfordshire and Buckinghamshire, will move into Tier 4 restrictions from tomorrow morning which means that all non-essential shops and gyms will be close, people must work from home if possible and people must not stay overnight away from home.
Speaking at Downing Street in the last hour, Mr Johnson said the move meant he was forced to look again at Christmas. The move to Tier 4 means people living in the affected areas should not mix with anyone outside their households.
Mr Johnson said: “I know how disappointing this will be but there is no alternative.
The evidence suggest infections would soar, hospitals would be overwhelmed and many thousands more would lose their lives.”
