Hemel Hempstead Hospital has been evacuated this morning (Monday, July 1) due to a chemical leak.
A resident called Hemel News saying that when they arrived for their appointment at 11.20am, police were already diverting people away from the hospital.
The resident asked a security guard what had happened and was told that a chemical spillage had occurred on Level 3 of the building and that a known side effect of the toxin is that it makes people fall asleep.
Thankfully, the security guard added that to his knowledge, no one has been hurt.
At 11.37am, Herts Fire Control wrote on X: “HFRS and other services are currently in attendance at Hemel Hempstead Hospital following a chemical leak. People have been evacuated from the immediate scene and a decontamination area has been established while investigations continue.”
A spokesperson for Herts Police confirmed that officers are in attendance to aid road closures.
At 2.30pm, a spokesperson for the West Herts HS Hospitals Trust offered the following update:
“Emergency responders to an incident at Hemel Hospital have now left the scene. Colleagues attended the site in response to a leak of cleaning fluid from a decontamination machine, which has now been resolved.
“Three members of staff were treated for minor injuries and have been discharged.
“Patients should attend their outpatients appointment as normal. We will contact patients if their appointment is cancelled.
“Thank you to staff, police, ambulance, and fire and rescue colleagues for their prompt and efficient response.”
