This month, ABBOTSnews spoke to John Horsfield about Abbots Langley Chess Club.
The club was established earlier this year at Abbots Langley Library and meets every second and fourth Monday of the month between 4pm and 5.30pm.
There are already several regular members and new members, including beginners, are welcome at every meeting.
John said: “Experienced players came along to enjoy testing their skills and there are some fierce battles! But it’s even more fun to help new players, particularly children.
“We had one eight-year-old boy who, once he had learned how to move the pieces, got very excited and persuaded both his parents to play chess at home with him. His mum said that he has not stopped talking about chess since he came to the club and that he dances out of school when it’s chess club night!
“Our library is an ideal and friendly venue for the club and we welcome all players, all the way from beginners to experienced.”
The club’s next meeting is on Monday, May 13.
