HS2 Ltd has revealed the designs for the exit of the Chiltern Tunnels, which are currently under construction and run deep underneath The Chalfonts and beyond.
The North Portal, which will be the exit located to the north of Buckinghamshire heading towards Birmingham, will be one of only seven structures from the project that will be visible above ground.
This includes the South Portal and the headhouses above the railway’s ventilation and emergency access shafts, placed in Chalfont St Giles, Chalfont St Peter, Amersham, Little Missenden and Chesham Road.
Construction of the twin tunnels, which will stretch for 10 miles under the Chiltern Hills, recently passed the halfway point, with the two giant tunnelling machines currently between Amersham and Little Missenden.
HS2 Ltd’s design director Kay Hughes said: “HS2 will provide zero-carbon journeys across the UK, improving links between London, Birmingham and the North, while freeing up space for more freight and local services on the existing main line.
“The Chiltern Tunnel North Portal will be one of the least visible parts of the project, but the reveal of the final designs is a major symbolic milestone.”
