Joel Street Allotments in Northwood are one of the three new Local Causes supported by the Co-op.
Last week, Sian and Mandy (interim secretary & chairperson) met Sue Wonghen, Co-op Member Pioneer, for a tour of this thriving community allotment site, a real hidden gem in the heart of Northwood Hills.
The allotments were first registered in 1910 and are now as popular as ever with around 130 plot holders.
To encourage new gardeners there are ‘starter plots’, and a ‘buddy’ scheme to match new members with an experienced gardener for help and advice.
There is a growing awareness of the role that gardening plays in improving mental health and physical fitness. It has been a refuge for many during the pandemic.
Funds raised from the Co-op will help to create a community garden where members can socialise and invite the local community for special events.
A new website for Joel Street Allotments is under construction.
