Watford Foodbank have thanked the community for helping them give a record amount of food to those in need over the Christmas period.
The Foodbank, which helps individuals and families in crisis by providing free emergency food as well as support, gave out 13 tonnes of food in December – the biggest figure since it opened in 2012.
Food parcels were provided for 640 people, including 279 children, from the Foodbank’s premises in Unit 5 of The Empire Centre, Imperial Way, Watford.
Foodbank manager Andrew Tranter told WatfordNews: “It was amazing to see how generous and kind the people of Watford are. The way they responded to us saying we needed community support this Christmas was just unbelievable.
“It was quite humbling to see how generous people could be; from individuals who went out and bought food to bring to us to local companies who collected themselves and brought half a tonne of food in at a time.
“Christmas is typically a time where people feel a bit more giving, but we’re confident we will beat our records for this entire year as well.”
Andrew was keen to focus on individual cases of kindness as well as the statistics.
He added: “In a particularly heart-warming case, we had a woman with two young children come in and she had nothing – she couldn’t feed her kids. As it happens, a woman had got in touch with us and said she wanted to donate a whole turkey to us. We put the women in touch with each other and that mum was able to give her kids a proper Christmas dinner.”
That woman later messaged the Foodbank saying: “I want to thank you so much for helping me out with food. I don`t know what I would have done without your help. My children have eaten well and the lady who brought us a turkey was lovely.”
