In the November edition of Radlett News, we reported that 12-year-olds Harry and Harley were gathering second-hand football boots for the London-based Charity Boots.
It turns out that the 12-year-olds set off quite the chain of events with their inspiring collection.
Not long after we reported on their story, Harry and Harley were delighted to receive a letter of thanks from Deputy Prime Minister Oliver Dowden, MP for Hertsmere, for the 109 football boots they collected from their school and local football club.
The MP was not the only Radlett local inspired by Harry and Harley’s donation. According to the charity’s founder Neil Smith, Radlett resident Colin Hardman got in touch to donate an astounding 263 pairs of new football boots after reading about the schoolboys’ charitable venture. According to Neil, Colin owned a shoe shop on Finchley Road for many years and had never found a suitable home for all his leftover stock when the shop closed down.
To date, Charity Boots has donated more than 6,000 pairs of football boots to footballers around the world unable to buy their own.
Neil said: “The magazine in Radlett helped us to reach so many people who could help. It just goes to show the power of the community, the generosity of the people and the importance of local journalism!”
Harry said: “It is really easy to make a difference by giving up a little bit of your time.”
Harley added: “I’d like to share the message that if you’ve got things you don’t use, think about what you can do with them for the good of other people.”
