Anthony Joshua, the former world heavyweight boxing champion who’s matches have earned him international recognition, returned to where he grew up on the Meriden Estate to throw a party for disadvantaged families.
A fun-filled event was held at the Meriden Community Centre, with the boxer and members of the team providing a Christmas lunch and fun activities for children who might be finding times tough currently.
Joshua, often known best by his nickname AJ, spent the entire afternoon getting stuck in with the kids, playing games with them, posing for pictures and even encouraging one child after losing with his wise words.
It was all part of the launch of his new initiative, Clean Herts Community, which he hopes will but some energy back into his hometown.
The foundation will provide support for local businesses via Joshua’s social media, with further events and projects planned throughout the year.
Joshua has always been vocal about his support for his hometown and wanting to find ways to invest in the future of the city’s young people.
The party had over 100 people attend, supported by Watford Borough Council. Jenny Pattinson, who was there providing support to AJ’s team, said:
“It was wonderful to see so many children have so much fun. AJ brought Joy to many at this event, and it meant so much to the community here in Meriden.”
