CELEBRATING QUEERNESS: St Albans based singer-songwriter prepares for tour ahead of new EP release

A singer-songwriter from St Albans is preparing to go on tour ahead of the release of her upcoming EP, Gingerbeer.

Lizzy Hardingham told STALBANSnews that she grew up in a musical household and spent a lot of time at gigs when she was younger. However, it was the support she received from the Parmiter’s School music department that allowed her to further explore her love of music.

Years later, the folk-inspired singer-songwriter has now released four albums, including her newest EP, The Leaving, which came out last month.

She said: “My music is quite introspective and infused with emotions that me, my friends and those around me are having at the time.”

Lizzy explained that it is thanks to the friends she met at university that she was able to explore her own queer identity. She added that if she had been known of more queer representation at a younger age, she may have been aware of this sooner.

She said: “Gingerbeer is quite vulnerable and explores queerness in folk music. People often think traditional music doesn’t have queerness in it, but there’s tonnes of it! I want to represent that.

“If I can put these songs in a collection people can access and hear something about queerness, it would be nice to know they’re helping someone else struggling with a similar thing. There is such an appetite in young people to feel represented.

“It took me a long time to realise that music could be something people can do, and growing up, I wished I could do it full-time.

“I would tell my younger self that this is an option and that you will get to do this for real one day!”

Gingerbeer comes out in October. Lizzy’s tour starts in September and her music is available now on Spotify. Find out more at www.lizzyhardingham.com
